Watchlist | It's About Time

On March 7 (postponed to April 12th 2022) psychologist Hedderik van Rijn and philosopher and physicist Sean Gryb will shed their light on questions such as what time means to them, and how it plays a role in their field of research in Collector's Items | Time Will Tell. A perfect time to go back in time and (re)watch our lectures related to the concept of time. What is time? How come that time flies when you’re having fun, while it seems to take ages when you’re waiting for someone who’s just a few minutes late? Can we travel back and forth in time? And how do we know what objects to keep that can tell us something about our present time in the future?

What to keep?
Your smartphone, the painting that you inherited, the empty can of the soda you just drank... The things we own and use not only reflect our personalities, but also characterise the time we live in. Museums collect a broad variety of these fragments of time that are of significant cultural or scientific value. But how do these institutions decide what (not) to keep? (29 March 2021). Time Flies Slowly
Neuroscientist Hedderik van Rijn explains why we can easily sense the shortest hesitation in a conversation, but when it comes to estimating the duration of one hour, we get it wrong by tens of minutes (20 October 2020). Watch recording

The Origin of Time
What is time exactly? Is it possible to go back in time? And how about making time stop ticking? Physicist Eric Bergshoeff tries to get to the essence of ‘time’ with the help of the laws of physics (6 October 2020). Watch recording

End of Daylight Saving Time and Then?
Every spring and winter we force ourselves into a tiny jetlag by switching the clock an hour forth and back. Chronobiologist Marijke Gordijn talked about the drawbacks and benefits of daylight saving time (21 March 2019). Watch recording

Luister opname
