Wat is de huidige staat van de democratie? Op 15 september is het de Internationale Dag van de Democratie. Als tegenhanger hiervan organiseren we op 24 september De Nacht van de Dictatuur in samenwerking met ProDemos, De Balie, Arminius en Forum Groningen met o.a. een interview met Jonathan Israël. In 2015 was hij ook te gast bij Studium Generale Groningen met een lezing over Nederlandse tolerantie. Tijd voor een watchlist met zijn lezing aangevuld met andere lezingen uit ons archief over democratie en dictatuur.

What is the current status of democracy? On September 15th it is the International Day of Democracy. Its counterpart, The Night of Dictatorships, is organised on September 24th in collaboration with ProDemos, De Balie, Arminium and Forum Groningen. Among other talks, Jonathan Israel will be interviewed. In 2015 he gave a lecture on Dutch toleration at Studium Generale Groningen. 1. Toleration in the Dutch Republic - A Changing Picture?
During the 16th and 17th centuries the Netherlands led the entire Western world with regard to religious toleration. How and why did the Netherlands lose its primacy in this sphere? Jonathan Israel shows that what had once been the source and guarantee of Dutch toleration after 1780 became the source of a residual intolerance and discrimination. (4 november 2015).
