Seven lectures on (un)happiness

It’s Blue Monday. On this depressing day we dived into our archives looking for some happiness. We found seven (a lucky number) lectures on (un)happiness. What impact do social relations have on our happiness? What if happiness begins to feel like a duty? And if we feel unhappy, what can we do about it?

#1 Happiness as a Duty – Trudy Dehue (English)
Trudy Dehue argues that we have come to regard happiness as a matter of individual performance and lack thereof as a matter of personal failure. Striving for it is an instance of the pressure to perform – which can make people quite unhappy. (September 19 2017). Watch recording

#2 The Why, What and How of Healthy Relationships – Sue Roffey (English)
Sue Roffey shows us how positive relationships make all the difference to the quality of our lives - they help us celebrate the good times and support us in the bad - they even help us keep well and live longer. (September 26 2017). Watch recording

#3 Mindfulness and Overcoming Mental Habits – Brian Ostafin (English)
An accumulating body of evidence suggests widespread benefits of mindfulness ranging from attenuating anxiety and depressive symptoms to increasing creativity and even to diminishing racial biases. Is it possible that mindfulness can have such an extensive variety of effects? And if so, how? (September 11 2017). Watch recording

#4 The Impact of Inequality (English)
Does geography matter when it comes to happiness and well-being? To what extent does where we live influence how we feel and why? Dimitris Ballas, Danny Dorling, Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett provide an overview of the increasingly compelling evidence of the impact of income and wealth inequality upon human well-being. (14 november 2018). Watch recording

#5 Machteloze maakbaarheid - Paul Verhaeghe
(12 februari 2013). Bekijk opname

(11 november 2013). Bekijk opname
