Documentary & discussion
Theo Kocken, Dirk Bezemer, Harry Garretsen, Niek Scholze & Martijn de Waal

The documentary Boom Bust Boom represents a global movement to change economics through education and encourage debate. The film is co-written by Monty Pyhton’s Terry Jones and the Dutch professor of economics Theo Kocken.
Monty Python’s Terry Jones presents Boom Bust Boom, a feature documentary explaining economics to everyone and kick starting a global debate. A combination of live action, animation and puppetry featuring high profile advocates such as John Cusack, leading experts including Nobel Prize winners Daniel Kahneman, Robert J. Shiller and Paul Krugman, the film represents a global movement to change economics through education and encourage debate. Boom Bust Boom proposes a simple idea - let’s adapt economics to human nature.

A unique look at why economic crashes will keep happening, Terry Jones says of the film: “If you don’t know what happened to the economy in 2008 you will do by the end of this film. I am hoping it will encourage debate on how we can adapt the economic system to human nature, instead of idly hoping humans will change.”
The film is co-written by Terry Jones and the Dutch economics professor and entrepreneur Theo Kocken. Their goal is to initiate a global debate. As Kocken points out: “The people in the street are the ones who directly or indirectly pay for and suffer from financial follies. It is crucial the public as a whole understands what went wrong and what they can do to try and stop it happening again. We want to support economic students around the world who struggle with the fact that what is taught at universities does not always link to reality.”

After the film screening (70 min.) there is a debate and Q&A session with Theo Kocken, economics professor VU University Amsterdam, Dirk Bezemer, associate professor Groningen University (both featuring in the film), Harry Garretsen, dean of the Faculty of Economics and  Business (RUG), Niek Scholze, master student International Economics & Business and Martijn de Waal, master student Business Administration.

This programme is organized by Studium Generale Groningen and the Economics and Business student Faculty association EBF.
