Directed by Andrew Niccol, USA 1997, 106 min
Language English | Subtitles Dutch
In the not-too-distant future genetic engineering of humans is common and your DNA determines the social class you belong to.

The film Gattaca depicts a future world in which parents are encouraged to decide the genetic makeup of their offspring before birth. In this world not everyone has access to the technology, and individuals who have not been genetically enhanced encounter severe discrimination. Society categorizes them as the underclass of humans that are only useful for menial jobs. One of these underclass men, Vincent Freeman, assumes the identity of Jerome Morrow, a perfect genetic specimen who is a paraplegic as a result of a car accident. With professional advice, Vincent learns to deceive DNA and urine sample testing. Just when he is finally scheduled for a space mission, his program director is killed and the police begin an investigation, jeopardizing his secret.

Introduction/aftertalk by Hans Harbers, philosopher.
