The Imitation Game

Film and Introduction
Rineke Verbrugge

To what extent does film capture the true nature of science? Sometimes it mirrors reality with striking precision, while other times it takes bold imaginative leaps. This dynamic tension between realism and imagination not only shapes public perceptions of science, but also inspires critical conversations about ethics, technological innovation, and the broader impact of scientific progress. In celebration of the upcoming 225 years anniversary of the Royal Natural Sciences Society of Groningen, we are organizing a special film series for those with a passion for cinema and a love for science. Each screening will be introduced by a scientist who will place the film in context of real-world science.

The Imitation Game (2014)

With Europe in the grip of Adolf Hitler’s advance, the British government decides to deploy its brightest scientists to counter the Nazis. Mathematician Alan Turing joins a carefully selected team of codebreakers at Bletchley Park, and we follow his personal life and groundbreaking work as he and his team are determined to unravel the German army’s highly secure Enigma cipher system.

Introduction by mathematician Rineke Verbrugge

Professor of logic and cognition Rineke Verbrugge will introduce the film and place the work of Alan Turing and his team in historical perspective. Verbrugge studies how logic and computational techniques are applied to analyze complex systems. What role did logic play in Turing’s work? And how did his methods lay the foundation for the development of computer science and artificial intelligence?

The talk will be in English, and the film will have Dutch subtitles.
