Eureka! is a science festival full of mini-lectures, music, and experimentation. On Friday, September 25, Forum Groningen transforms into a meeting place where scientists, artists, and visitors explore the theme Resilience in Times of Change together. Studium Generale can be found at Eureka! with Collector’s Items and Table Thoughts. Pull up a chair with a scientist for a short conversation during Table Thoughts (continuously) or join one of the Collector's Items. Host Marit Nygård will introduce each talk and speaker with a personalized song!
Songwriter Marit Nygård is an avid collector, with the stage as her display case. She sings about birds, shells, weeds, and all the experiences that come with being in your twenties in an uncertain world. With a background in biology and science communication, she uses music to shed light on the emotional world behind the hard facts.
TALKS
Sleeping Through the Winter: Let's Hibernate - Rob Henning (ENG)
20:30 - 21:00u STACH
Hibernation is a fascinating phenomenon from the animal kingdom – really getting away from it all for a couple of months. No eating, no drinking – everything is ‘on hold’. Rob Henning, Professor of Anaesthesiology at the University of Groningen, usually puts people under anaesthesia for surgeries, but he also studies animals going into hibernation. There are numerous health benefits to hibernation and we can learn a lot from it. In this lecture, he explains whether we as humans will ever start hibernating and why you would also ever want to.
This talk was scheduled to be held by Dina Sarsembayeva. Unfortunately, she had to cancel her talk, but Rob Henning will take her place.
Waarom mannen en vrouwen anders slapen - Danique Zantinge (NL)
21:20 - 21:50u STACH
Too Busy to Sleep: The Social Life of Fruit Flies | Adithya Sarma (ENG)
22:10 - 22:40u STACH
Why do we sleep, and what actually counts as good or bad sleep? We often assume that more sleep is always better, but this may depend on the situation. Sleep is also not something we always do alone. Humans often sleep close to partners, family members or others, but this is also true for organisms as tiny as a fruit fly. This raises an important question: how does the social environment influence when we sleep and when we stay awake? Adithya Sarma explains how fruit flies can help us understand the relationship between sleep and social behaviour.
Adithya Sarma is a neuroscientist and postdoctoral researcher at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour. During his PhD at the University of Groningen, he studied how social interactions influence sleep and memory.
